Thrive™ Chapters:
First Week Home * Week 9 & 10

The Opportunity

Early development is not  about doing more. It is about doing the right things at the right time.

A few well-timed experiences during this sensitive period can matter more than a long list of random exposures, and more than many attempts to make up for missed opportunities later.

The timeline below shows how those early weeks unfold, and how Thrive™ helps you help the puppy reach its full potential as a wonderful family dog.

“A long walk and grooming with a well-mannered dog is a Zen experience that leaves you refreshed and in a creative frame of mind.”
— Dean Koontz

All puppies develop. Thrive is about helping your puppy develop into a dog you'll enjoy living with.

OWNER & THRIVE™ -
WEEKS 9-16

Week 9

Connection & Orientation

Goal: the puppy learns the owner is safe, clear, rewarding, and worth returning to.

Do not rush the world. Become the puppy’s person first.

Weeks 10 - 11

Guided Exploration

Goal: puppy sees more of the world without feeling alone & flooded.

Simple exposure is not the goal. Good judgment and a sense of having a safe owner are the goals.

Weeks 12 - 13

Making Sense

Goal: puppy learns that novelty, frustration, and choices can be handled successfully.

The puppy continues to learn how to succeed and to expect to succeed.

Weeks 14 - 16

The Big Picture

Goal: early patterns become daily habits.

The puppy is not finished, but is very well started - the pattern of partnership is beginning.

How Thrive™ Works

1. We've built the foundation.
During the first eight weeks, we give puppies carefully timed experiences that support thinking, recovery, curiosity, and deep connection.

2. You continue it at home through week 16, when the sensitive period is ending.
Thrive™ helps you carry that foundation into your puppy’s new routines, home life, outings, training games, and relationship with you.

3. Each week gives you clear focus.
Not a long homework list. Thrive gives you simple guidance for what to notice, what to practice, and how to guide your puppy through ordinary life. Early on, most early exercises take as little as a few minutes.

Week 9: Connection & Orientation (a 10% excerpt)

FOCUS
Home, rhythm, connection, and recall.

Your puppy’s first week in his new home expands his world enormously. New people, rooms, smells, sounds, routines, sleeping places, potty patterns, affection, and expectations are already a full plate.

This week, the goal is not to add more. The goal is to help your puppy succeed with the new life he already has. A successful first week at home is exactly the enrichment a young puppy needs this week.

PUPPY SKILL
Notice and re-engage.

OWNER SKILL
Practice productive patience. Reward the check-in.

SIMPLE PRACTICE
In a quiet, safe place, let your puppy explore a few feet away from you. Do not nag or keep repeating his name. Wait for a voluntary check-in: a glance, a turn, a step toward you, or coming all the way back. Mark it warmly, reward it, and then let him explore again.

THE LESSON IS SIMPLE
It feels good to explore, come back, connect, and go explore again.

The Finishing Touch Is You!

Thrive is delivered week by week through short text messages with links to age-appropriate guidance. Each week helps you notice what matters now: connection, recall, handling, outings, play, rest, recovery, and small habits that shape the companion your puppy becomes.

You do not need to be a professional trainer, just to be willing to do things with your puppy, watch carefully, and become a steadier guide.

Wherever you're starting you'll improve at really seeing your puppy and understanding what he wants, what he's uncomfortable with, when he needs guidance to behave properly. And more - for example when he needs protection you'll be quicker to recognize and prevent bad situations.

Specific skills translate the owner’s love into guidance the puppy can understand, and the puppy’s natural drives into deeper connection with you and  successful and competent choices.

FAQ

Is Thrive obedience training?

No. Thrive is developmental guidance for the first weeks at home. It supports connection, confidence, recovery, recall, handling, and good choices. Obedience can grow from that foundation, but Thrive is not just a command list.

How is Thrive delivered?

Each week through a short text message with a link to age-appropriate guidance.

How much time does it take?

Most early exercises take as little as a few minutes and fit into normal life with your puppy. You can start spending longer on exercices after a few weeks.

Do I need dog training experience?

No. Thrive is written for thoughtful owners who are willing to watch, guide, and practice simple things consistently with kindness and enthusiasm. This also works toward developing your skills at being a great dog owner!

Do I have to pursue AKC titles or classes?

No. AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy, Trick Dog, CGC, 4-H, classes, etc. can be useful and fun, but they are optional. The priority is relationship and development.

Does Thrive replace a local trainer?

A good local trainer or classes can still be valuable. Thrive helps you understand what enrichment will most benefit your your puppy during this early stage.
